Advertising manager Cara Wainwright returns home after dealing with her terminally ill mother to find a courtyard full of police officers and her visiting friends murdered inside her condo.
Greenville, SC Detective David Morris, is unsure if Cara is the suspect or the intended victim. Pulled together in a world of uncertainty and deceit, Cara pushes for answers about the family company's involvement, while David searches for insight into her family, their mounting secrets, and the conflicting bits of evidence. At the center of all of it stands Cypher—the family’s company, a secret military complex Cara’s father built and will take any measures to defend.
Then the assassin strikes again--at the heart of the family. Cara and David must trust each other and work together to stop the murders before the killer eliminates the entire Wainwright dynasty.
CYPHER edition by Cathy Perkins Romance eBooks
Life throws curve balls…and sometimes it hits you right between the eyes.Cara Wainwright is still processing her mother’s diagnosis of terminal cancer when her house guests turn up dead. She’s devastated by their loss, horrified their killer is on the loose and furious when the police tag her as their number one suspect instead of catching the murderer.
Luckily for her, Detective David Morris isn’t buying the obvious clues. The political and familial ties revolving around the investigation complicate his job. But he’s got questions, and he’s not afraid to rattle a few doors to get the answers.
The investigation throws Cara and David together, forcing them to trust one another in order to solve the case before anyone else gets hurt. Mutual attraction and dangerous circumstances create a bond between the two, but obligations and the reality of their circumstances could tear them apart.
I love when a book’s plot line and character development are equally strong. Ms. Perkins kept me guessing who was behind the murders and why until the real killer was revealed. The characters were interesting and well-developed. Cara is a strong heroine, both in personality and relatable faults. Detective Morris is a solid alpha hero with a gentle, nurturing side. I also appreciated the theme of strong family ties that gelled these characters at their core.
Cypher delivers a solid mystery with satisfying elements of romantic suspense. I look forward to reading more of Ms. Perkins’ work.

CYPHER edition by Cathy Perkins Romance eBooks Reviews
Waiter, there's a dead couple in my bed!
Or something like that. Anyway, Ms. Perkins has a winner here. Cypher's quite the mystery--who killed the couple in Cara's bed? Was it Cara? Cara knows it wasn't, but the police aren't so sure (except, of course, for the good cop--the good, SINGLE cop!). But if it wasn't Cara who did it, who did? And why? And were they the intended targets? If not, who was? OMIGOD, so many questions...so much stuff to find out.
All I can say is Great characters, well-organized plot, fun, fun, fun (well, if murder is your idea of fun!).
I just couldn't put Cypher down! It leaps out of the starting gate with a double homicide and a case of mistaken identity, and the twists and turns keep going from there. The romance between Cara and David is hot! David is a wonderful hero - a tough cop who finds himself drawn into the drama surrounding Cara, who is dealing with betrayals and is on the run from a ruthless hit man. As they let their guards down and learn to trust each other, the romance blossoms even as danger closes in. Guaranteed to keep you up all night.
How do you combine a romance story with a murder mystery? I don't know the formula, but Cathy Perkins has accomplished the feat with Cypher. She's managed to give the reader clues and conundrums in just the right balance and added a tad of touch and tease to titillate, enticing enough to make you stay up too late reading and wake up an hour earlier in the morning so you can read more before getting ready for work.
Cypher is a wonderful 'get me out of my life' adventure that I never expected to find. If I didn't like it, I never would have got past the first chapter and you wouldn't be reading this review. (If I don't like it, I don't slam it because it might be just right for someone else).
If you want to shake up your reading repertoire, try this wonderful 'crossover' story.

Try Cypher and step into the middle of two lovers being assassinated. What seems a simple murder quickly slides into convolutions of mystery, masking the international involvement of big-time financial criminals? Plenty of solid leads and red herrings fill this story. Detective Dave Morris works to solve the continuous criminal thumps while trying to protect, Cara Wainwright, a love interest the case delivered.
If I had a criticism, it would be, I wish the author had gone a bit further with a few of the minor characters, such as the older detective Pennell. The cliché of a rivalry between different state and Federal police agencies was thankfully missing. The various police officers did their work and agency turf wars weren’t introduced for artificial conflict at the ground level.
Cathy Perkins is the author of two other books I will soon purchase in hopes she delivers another equally enjoyable whodunit. She sets her novel in Greenville, South Carolina. It is obvious the author knows the territory, culture and people which strengthens her yarn. If you try this work, expect a good, fast-paced read, a pleasant escape and a mind tease as you follow the threads.
CYPHER starts out with a bang! Cara Wainwright's two houseguests are murdered in her own bedroom which she specifically had asked them not to occupy. Could the murders simply been a case of mistaken identity? Detective Pennel, first on the scene, thinks not and is almost certain Cara had something to do with their demise. However his unwilling partner, Detective Morris, doesn't buy into the theory and chooses to work with Ms. Wainwright to solve this ever-changing mystery. Just when I think I know who the killer is, Ms. Perkins throws in a twist and turn that proves me wrong, dead wrong!
Storyline and character development are solid. Cara is feisty and short-tempered; Morris, easygoing and more level-headed. Although they seem like quite the opposite in personality, the two are attracted to each other leading to romantic involvement.
Only one point in the way of constructive criticism however. The ebook edition is formatted in blocked margins. Although it gives the text a clean look, there are quite a few large spaces between words that made it somewhat difficult for me to stay focused. The spaces were a slight distraction.
That being said, I highly recommend CYPHER, a fine read from a terrific author!
